Message from the Diocesan Director of Vocations and Seminarians

This past summer I had the privilege of travelling with a group of just over 50 pilgrims, from our diocese, to World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland. .

I would like to share with you a portion of Pope Francis’ message to us, during the Saturday evening vigil. Reflecting on the attitude of the Apostles at Pentecost, our Holy Father warned us of different paralyses in the lives of young people today. The first being fear in general, and the second being a confusion of happiness with comfort. Here are his exact words: Here are his exact words:

But in life there is another, even more dangerous, kind of paralysis.  It is not easy to put our finger on it.  I like to describe it as the paralysis that comes from confusing happiness with a sofa.  In other words, to think that in order to be happy all we need is a good sofa.  A sofa that makes us feel comfortable, calm, safe.  A sofa like one of those we have nowadays with a built-in massage unit to put us to sleep.  A sofa that promises us hours of comfort so we can escape to the world of videogames and spend all kinds of time in front of a computer screen.  A sofa that keeps us safe from any kind of pain and fear.  A sofa that allows us to stay home without needing to work at, or worry about, anything.  “Sofa-happiness”!  That is probably the most harmful and insidious form of paralysis, which can cause the greatest harm to young people.  And why does this happen Father?  Because, little by little, without even realizing it, we start to nod off, to grow drowsy and dull.”

Vocations of all kinds can only flourish with an openness to sacrificial love, which is not always comfortable but always grace-filled and leads to a deeper form of happiness in life.

With my prayers,

Fr. Patrick Bénéteau

Faithful Navigators Message

Sir Knights & Ladies:

Patriotism is the arm of the 4th Degree. With November approaching let us remember those that have given of themselves for freedom.

Our first Dinner Meeting of the season was held on September 26th. We had a very good turnout. Everyone enjoyed the delicious meal prepared by L&M Catering.

During our meeting various topics were discussed.

The 4th Degree working Bingo once a month was discussed. A decision was made to apply to the City of Stratford for a license and then proceed from there.

This year our Assembly has lost two Sir Knights, Bob Skinner & Ernie Walsh. A Memorial Donation has been made to St. Vincent de Paul Stratford honouring their memory.

Our Assembly hosted Installation of Officers on Oct 2nd for Stratford & Seaforth Assemblies. I want to thank those who helped make this a success.

The annual Memorial Service will be held Nov 2nd 7 PM at Immaculate Conception Church. An Honour Guard has been requested for this Service.

Our Communion Breakfast is fast approaching. It will be on Sunday November 6.

Mass at 10:00 AM followed by Brunch at the Queens Inn11:45 AM Cost is $17.00

Fraternally Yours

Jack Palleschi

Insurance News

LTC Is an Important Piece of the Puzzle

There are many financial consultants and retirement authorities who emphasize the need for a longterm care (LTC) product for estate preservation and family protection. While many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle.

The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 15 years without a premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts. If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me.

Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Jay Nelligan MDRT FIC

New Members

Welcome to our newest member, Brother William Van Straaten. That surname should ring a bell for members as Will now joins brothers Mike and Steve in the Order. Will farms near Sebringville with his Dad. Brother Jim Gaylor is thinking up a plan for a Van Straaten take-over of the Perth West region for State Charity ticket sales.

Also, we welcome Brother John Bettridge who has been reinstated.

St. Anthony Mass

Two weeks prior to the scheduled annual mass at the St. Anthony mission church, vandals smashed the door, entered and broke windows and damaged the altar. Thanks to many brother Knights and others who worked on repair and clean up, the church was ready and very presentable for mass on September 13, celebrated by pastor Father Bester. Thank you also to the brother Knights who served refreshments afterwards.

Please welcome Alan Grapes to our Council. Alan joined the Knights 1965 in Hagersville, later moved to Galt and in the mid 1970’s took a leave from the Order. No doubt he got wind of Kilroy Council and its great opportunities to get involved in things like Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels, State Charity ticket sales, Rose Sunday, BBQs, Memorial Services, Share the Wealth for the Stratford General Hospital, Knight’s Inc., Bingo, Lenten Services, Basketball Free Throw, Euchre parties, Breakfast at Immacs, up-keep of St. Anthony’s church, AND matching wits with the likes of Harry Visser… what more can be said? Welcome Alan!!
